Some of you may have seen the news recently about machete bans coming into effect in Victoria, and wondered how the ban works and what the effect may be on Victorian clubs, as well as fencers travelling to and from Victoria.
As it currently stands, the ban does not appear to affect HEMA clubs in any way.
The ban, which has been passed by parliament, sets out to amend the Control of Weapon Act (1990) by extending it through the Firearms and Control of Weapons (Machetes) Amendment Bill 2024.
The bill adds machetes to the list of Controlled Weapons, and has no further implications for our activities. Historical Fencing clubs in Australia are still covered under the General Exemption for Fencing, as usual.
HFA have been monitoring this as the legislation has progressed through parliament, and will continue to do so if anything changes.
